  • Species and varieties: The French Breakfast Radish (Raphanus sativus) is a popular heirloom variety known for its mild flavor and crisp texture. It is characterized by its elongated, cylindrical shape with a red top and white tip. This variety is often harvested young for the best flavor and texture.
  • Hybrid or heirloom: The French Breakfast Radish is an heirloom variety, meaning it has been passed down through generations without genetic modification. Heirloom seeds are valued for their historical significance and genetic diversity.
  • Pruning and training: French Breakfast Radishes do not require pruning or training. They are a low-maintenance crop that grows quickly, typically maturing in 20-30 days. Regular harvesting encourages continuous production.
  • Fertilization needs: Radishes generally do not require heavy fertilization. A well-balanced, all-purpose fertilizer applied at planting time is usually sufficient. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, as they can promote excessive leaf growth at the expense of root development. Ensure the soil is well-drained and rich in organic matter for optimal growth.
  • Hardiness zones: French Breakfast Radish seeds are suitable for USDA hardiness zones 2-10. They can be grown in a wide range of climates, making them a versatile choice for many gardeners.
  • Climate requirements: These radishes prefer cool weather and can be planted in early spring or fall. They thrive in temperatures between 50-70°F (10-21°C). In warmer climates, they can be grown in partial shade to avoid excessive heat, which can cause the radishes to become woody and bitter.
